SUbMit YOUR WORK!

We thank you for your interest in submitting to The Kairos Review! Our youth-powered literary magazine is currently OPEN for submissions until  February 20th, 2024 for our SECOND issue!  We ask that when you submit work, you adhere to the genre requirements and guidelines below, or we may have no choice but to reject your piece. Please note, we only accept work from YOUNG AUTHORS, ages 13-21. Happy writing!

GENRE  REQUIREMENTS

Poetry

Prose

You may submit up to three poems that are, in total, no longer than five pages in length. One poem may not be longer than three pages. You may submit any poetic form, except for calligrams.

You may submit up to 5,000 words of fiction for a short story, and you may submit no less than 150 words for a piece of flash fiction. If you would like to submit more than one piece of fiction, we ask that each piece be limited to 1,500 words. 

Scientific Writing

Historical Writing

You may submit up to 1,000 words of expository scientific writing. We ask that you attach a bibliography at the end of your piece, detailing which sources you utilised. Please use Chicago Manual of Style citations; when using a source in your work, cite with parenthetical footnotes. For example: ...an already mounting corpus of clinical trials. (1))

You may submit up to 3,000 words of historical writing. We ask that you attach a bibliography at the end of your piece, detailing which sources you utilised. Please use Chicago Manual of Style citations, and if you use a source in your work, we ask you cite with superscript footnotes. For example: ...thus the regime came to a close.

Op-Eds

You may submit up to 1,000 words of any opinion piece, be it a perspective on European politics or criticism of a piece of literature. We do not need you to footnote, but we ask you to include a bibliography at the end of your piece. We ask you, first and foremost, to be respectful in your piece.

Critical Essay

 You may submit up to 2,000 words of critical essay in response to a piece of literature. Your piece must present a unique thesis and it must cull from your text using quotations. We ask you to include a bibliography at the end of your piece, and you may cite quotations utilising the following format: …in which, concomitant to her pride, “created a flood in Aria’s mind” (Author Name, Page #)

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

GENERAL GUIDELINES

  • All pieces should be in 11pt font (preferably Garamond, Times) + 1.5 pt spaced

  • All pieces should be submitted via Google Docs (preferably) or Microsoft Word

​

  • Include your name, your school name (and year of graduation) , and your location (city, state, and country) 

​​

  • Include a centered or left-justified title above your piece.

​

  • Include content warnings if possible. 

​

  • If you have multiple pages, include page numbers on the top right corner. You can do this by double-clicking on the docs header and selecting page numbers. Page numbers should be right justified​

RESTRICTIONS

  • Do not submit a piece that includes gratuitous sexual or violent content. 

​

  • Do not submit a piece that promotes or attempts to justify acts of racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, or any additional form of hatred and discrimination. 

​

  • Do not use any form of generative AI in the writing of your piece. You will automatically be rejected. ​

​

  • Do not plagiarise or copy other work. You will automatically be rejected if you do not utilise proper citation.​
